What else is going on?

Here's a thread for you to post what else is going on in your life, maybe the things that keep you apart from your project, or just interesting stuff that happens to you.

Like this:

We've been living with a construction zone almost in our backyard for about a month now. They are replacing the sewer line, and have been blasting through solid rock to do it. Or when they aren't blasting there's a constant pounding as they hammer through the limestone layers.

As of today it IS in our backyard. I snapped some photos to prove it.

Hi Chris, We had that for

Hi Chris, We had that for almost an entire year here just last year or the year before (I try to forget). They built an entire sewage treatment plant next door to us and also ran the new line in a new spot (twice !!) .. but all the noise and vibration was right here. Both Sue and I never got enough sleep to keep our systems stoked up and they used old lagoon dirt in the project so the bacteria in the area was horrible. We both had pneumonia twice. I missed the open house on the plant when I was in Argos ... I think you still get up early so you won't be needing an alarm clock for a while. I haven't used one in 30 or so years .. Mike

Well here's my discovery for

Well here's my discovery for today. Look what I found under the plastic side panels.... Completely hidden from view, surrounded by perfect metal. Basically no rust anywhere else on the car. This is non-structural and can be repaired.

Another item on the to-do list.

This is what distracts me

This is what distracts me from my gasifier, work. Having to work 5 days a week this summer. Easy enough, office mgr. Typical load of logs coming into the mill, about 30 tons mixed hardwood for ties, pallets, & dunage blocks. I need to start getting the waste cut-offs for chunkier fuel.

My outdoor welding shop feels

My outdoor welding shop feels like I'm welding without turning on a machine. It was 110 yesterday, similar today and more expected tomorrow. You'd never know we don't live in the desert - we're at 3000' in the Sierra Nevada foothills of CA.

Hi Lee, Were you named after

Hi Lee, Were you named after the comet ?? Mid day today the moon was clear as crystal in the sky here in Wisconsin. We have had rain but most of the corn and beans are trashed and half dead and there is no moisture in the air. I have only dumped condensate on one drive here this summer and that was right after the rain the other day .. Hope to get my new cyclone on the trailer tomorrow .. I worked hard today to allot time for it ... I think it will happen ... Wifey had enough of me and the world today ... OOK

It's vacation time, most dump

It's vacation time, most dump and construction shops are closed. So new mixer has to wait to next weeks. We're busy in our veg garden now. Canning fruit and vegs. A self sufficient live eats a lot of time. But we're also enjoying the nice weather while it lasts.

Car needed MOT, almost forgot it. Everything fine, except for the dust boots in the front suspension/steering. All seals are dead on this almost 40 year old truck. The recent changed pignion seal looked more like bakelite than rubber.... A pic of my sunday morning fumbling. I am getting great respect for American materials. Each nut came off very easy, despite some had never been loosened before.

DJ

The wife and I just got back

The wife and I just got back from vacation in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It was great to have such cool temperatures after the heat wave here in Ohio all summer. The perch were biting like crazy and I probably cleaned about 300 of them. Good eating! Now back home and back to the gasifier.

Hi DJ,

Hi DJ,

That's a familiar sight! There's nothing quite like an old American truck, eh? The reason the bolts loosen so easily is that they have been auto-greased for the past 40 years by leaking oil. This should be a design feature. Plus you mentioned this is a California truck, so there's less rust.

HI GUYS, WELL MY DISTRACTION

HI GUYS, WELL MY DISTRACTION THIS WEEK IS, PAUL A CHURCH FRIEND NEEDED HIS TROLING MOTOR WELDED, SO GUESS WHO HE ASK TO FIX IT ? I GET ALL KINDS OF WELDING JOBS THAT I DO NOT ASK FOR. FROM WELDING NEIGHBORS LAWN MOWERS TO EXAUST PIPES ON THIRE CARS. PHOTOS OF THE TROLING MOTOR BEFORE AND AFTER, THE BOTTOM FIN GOT BROKEN OFF IT WAS ALUMINUM. I HAD TO PUT MY SPOOL GUN BACK ON THE WELDER AND CHANG THE GAS TANK TO STREIGHT ARGON. I WORK FOR FUDGE LOL, HIS WIFE MAKES GREAT FUDGE.

Hi David, I take it that fin broke on dry land or would have been lost in the mud at the bottom of the lake. How did you keep the housing cool so the motor windings didn't get damaged by the heat ??

Nice job welding, and I agree with Mike, however is that cast aluminum, or that "pot metal" I have never had any success getting pot metal welded and have it have any strength.

Chris, Well I'm trying again

Chris, Well I'm trying again from a different location and different computer .. Just very frustrating to do a simple thing like upload a single small picture. My first computer work was in 1968. It won't let me load it from here either. I went through a bunch of crap with the Mother Earth News folks and they finally got it straightened out. I could not even begin to load their site. I do not have a high speed option here and it is possible that this site will not allow me to upload anything but text due to my connect speeds. This is the only thing I can figure is happening. Maybe we can confirm this if Steve U tries to upload a picture .. I'm about ready to say color me gone but I know better ... ML

Maybe you did fix it ?? I just uploaded the picture to my new blog and it worked fine so I know the java script etc is OK ... I'll try here as well .. and THEN will read your e-mail .. Remember that my father and most of my senior relatives went to fight the book burning nazis and japs back when .. Every time I feel censored I have to give them credit for taking them on and give the other folks a ration of crap .. Heck, they just picked one of our congressmen, Paul Ryan to run as vice prez .. He's a nice guy but remember that McCarthy was also from Wisconsin and many people were needlessly persecuted as communists and suffered because of that guy .. He looks like something from the early 60's .. Read the book of Mormon when you get a chance and understand the the difference between Lamanites and Nephites .. Excuse my spelling as I haven't read it since 1977 but I read it twice back then .. That's my 2 cents on that .. This is an open topic so I am not off topic .. Sorry I could not make it to Madison but will try to catch you next time ... Let's see if the pic makes it this time ??? ... Nope !! ... I don't know what is up but maybe you have run out of disk space or the such ?? Let's see if Steve U can upload a picture .. Mike

Hi MikeL and All

Hi MikeL and All
Just pretty much busy here working up firewood. SHOULD be putting it INSIDE the wood shed already dried wood but the last three years been having to leave it out until October to try and dry it more. All of the rain you "easterners" did not get has been landing here in May, June and July. North Pacific jet stream occilation they say. Read a book about David Douglas plant surveying here back in the 1820's, 30's and he was complaining about the same thing this time of year. So not a new thing at all.
Only have been having a summer now for the last 1 1/2 weeks - still having to wear rubber boots the first half of the day for the evening soaking dew downs.
Mike stupid me I went ahead and had an old worn out tooth extracted just before this now favorable weather change. Using my energy now for wedging splitting and wood moving out into the sunnier spots and it ain't healing properly - kinnda worrisome.
Good news is I bought an engine driven welder-generator and been tearing it down to plan out woodgasing this system. Last three years out gardens yeilds have plumetted due to lack of dryness and sun. I will be upgrading out greenhouse and getting serious about going back to heating and lighting it all winter. Pictures and comments later when I have time to make a plan.

Pictures test for now:
A local road side Dodge Dakota for sale
Kubota D1005 watercooled engine on a Kubota brand zero skid mower showing they believe, YES YOU CAN TO take all power off if the front of the engine crank PTO hub.
My latest log that I am fire wood working up. Yep fellows what would have been before the Clinton/Gore era a $1.000 dollar 44" saw/peeler log. Now a cull tree with all of the big old regional mill shut downs. They only now want 5" to 30" OD's in lengths up 40 feet now for the new laser guided CNC mills.

Oh boy, I get to go back on

Oh boy, I get to go back on the road for a week. So this is going to through a wrench into my schedualing. But its for a good cause, my repacement had to be rushed to the hospital early this morning out in Hartford Ct. So they asked me (or something like that) to take his place. This will be the first time since mid march that I have worked my job since going full time into Vulcan. But its all good the original plan was to build these gasifires on the weekends, Yeah right!!! :)

Hope Jim is OK out there I will check on him as soon as I get the chance :(

Steve U, Thanks for the picture test and the pictures .. Sorry to hear about the tooth .. I have a loose one (upper wisdom) but still chew on it and that keeps shoving it back in it's socket. I suppose if it gets real bad I can probably pull it myself. I don't think the tooth fairy will leave me any money under my pillow. I swear by an old water pick I have when things get worked up. Watch the raspberry seeds .. Stay well, Mike L

Honey Bees

Went to check my bees this morning and there was a swarm on the ground in front of my hives, dident get a picture before I picked them up and put them in a bucket then into a new hive. Richard,

Richard,
I am a beekeeper as well. Got my first hives this spring. Don't know what in the heck I'm doing yet, but so far the colonies are still alive. From what I understand I shouldn't have to worry about swarms until next year (year #2). Hope you captured the queen with the rest of the swarm. May have a beekeeping question or two for you this fall as I prepare for winter. My only real resource right now is the book Beekeeping For Dummies.

How many ton you put up in a year, Wayne? Must have a pretty nice herd a critters to feed come winter. That is really awesome country you all have back there. Folks out here in Eastern Washington been really puttin' up the hay, but now Fall is in the air and the days have dropped from the 90's to the low 80's and 70's, so they'll be finished before too long.

Hello Mr. Jim,

Hello Mr. Jim,

On an average year I put up near a hundred ton. This year could do a lot more if I had the time.

I cut my pasture a month ago and the grass is back up to where it’s hard to see the calves.

Pretty good year for growin'

Pretty good year for growin' hay! I grew up on a small cattle ranch an' put up a lot of hay, too....mostly custom hayin' on shares as we didn't have enough pasture to feed the cattle and cut enough hay of our own, too. Somehow wish I could come help you out but, alas, the foster kids keep us pretty busy and now school's started an' huntin' season is almost upon us....just not enough hours in a day even when one is retired!

Wayne,
Might wanna bundle some more hay up and ship it.. 3rd cutting alfalfa is like 6 bucks a bale around here on CL. I think think grass hay was like 4 bucks for the square bales. With this drought I can't imagine other places aren't as bad..

Hey. Well same here on the

Hey. Well same here on the too much grass growing rain and no "good" days strings before the end of July to make any good hay. 3rd year of this.
Fir trees lovin' it. 3rd year also of too cool, too long early resulting in declining garden output.
So . . . the lemons and lemonade thing - wife now is turning us into canoe-ists.
We are working our way down from a 4000 ft high (1220 meters) high mountain lake, to an only 2000 ft high (610 meters) volcanic crater lake before the really cold wet weather sets in. 23 more high local lakes, reservoirs and rivers on the list yet to go. Then have the low elevation stuff to paddle while she does her birding.
Ha! Ha! Have to add some oar locks and a center seat before I can solo fish out of HER new to her 10 year old "canoe". It moves really more like a 14' double pointed ended boat.
