Michigan Meet and Greet

Wayne has given me permission to post his appearance in Covert, MI. Since he has business to conduct on Wednesday and Thursday, the chance to hang out with the Gasifier In Chief will be Tuesday the 24th in the afternoon/night for us groupies. Traveling along I-196, it is exit 18, head east to 28th Avenue and head south to 75127. The host, Barbara Norman asks for nothing and will welcome all.

Doug,

Doug,

It's late and my brain is slow, if I understand you correctly, we're headed to;

75127 28th Avenue
Covert, MI

I Google mapped this and had some trouble with your directions (again, might be me, feel free to slap me)
is this what you meant;

From I-196, take exit 18 (M-140)
Go South on M-140 to 28th Avenue
Go West on 28th avenue to;

75127 28th Avenue
Covert, MI 49043

Tuesday the 24th, in the afternoon. What time in the afternoon should we plan to arrive? Will there be a sign or something so we know we are in the right area?

Hello Henry,

Hello Henry,

There may not be a lot of activity because we are a day early but there might be a big tent already in place. We will be right on the road side of 28th ave. You will see fruit trees at the site but can’t see the blue berry fields from the road.
Sean and I plan on dropping by Ron lemlers near Argos Tuesday morning and should be at the event site around noon.
Sean and I will be putting down a lot of miles. We both think we have good operating gasifiers but now we are working on what we call the other 75% of the gasifier, vehicle, operator equation.

The first pic shows 28th ave in the background and your senator’s assistant in the foreground.

The second pic shows the tent in the background and wine makers in the foreground.

HAVE WOOD, WILL TRAVEL

Sean drove up from Florida in his Ford and we will be leaving in the morning and next stop will be up near Ron Lemlers near Argos In.

Gary Gram and his wife came by today and I showed them the wood chucker working, also looked the trucks over and I gave him a ride.

Great Wayne, I'll try to

Great Wayne, I'll try to arrive between Noon and 1 PM. Hopefully I got the directions/address correct above. I'll be looking for your Dakota!

Keep your eyes open for a Tan colored Scion XB with Yakima roof racks. I can't afford to drive my soon to be woodgas truck on petrol so I'll be traveling in the box, still burns gas, but gets good mileage!

Chris, I heard my phone

Chris, I heard my phone ringing as I was walking home from the trailer. I was barefoot and around 400 feet from the trailer so I let the answering machine do it's thing as I knew I couldn't make it back up there on the gravel fast enough anyway plus it might have been some jerk calling for Jimmy Johns with the wrong area code or about work at 9:30 PM .. I'm hoping it was just them at the fleabag in Rochester. I'll post in the morning .. Mike

Yepper, Wayne called around 9:30 last night. They made their 600 miles and are at the fleabag in Rochester. They are in rescue range of Ron now and of many of the others that made the Argos meet as they head further north.

Ron, Thanks for being the first official woodgas filling station in the midwest. Your wood is the best and I would have gladly taken a whole box you offered if I had the room. I still have 2 sacks from Argos and part of one from Akron. I like to show them to people here. Glad to hear you got your pool fixed. We sure have needed them this year. Supposed to be 100 here tomorrow .. Mike

Thanks Ron and I might actually take you up on a bigger load some day .. I need to check into a hotel or go to McDonalds or something to look at the video that Bruce posted .. I'm glad we are finally building a decent network .. I am having a hell of a time with the trailer. I have it burned to the grate now so hopefully tomorrow I can scrape all the crap off of that and get back to normal with full power .. I guess I need a grate shaker every thousand miles or so .. A 2.2 liter doesn't pull it right to keep it cleared but it always makes clean gas but less and less of it .. Everything else has been cleaned out .. I'm coughing soot from the cooler right now .. Sean,

Sean,

I Was wondering if you'd take time to visit the lake while up here. We like our ponds on the larger side of huge round these parts - folks out on the west coast have a hard time believing we surf on a lake!

I am now more motivated than ever to get going and complete my build, the ride in Wayne's truck was truly inspirational.

Hello all,

Hello all,

I have a lot of catching up to do and will be posting some pics and videos.

The dakota ran great, and was able to get 100 miles per hopper fill when we were using good wood. We drove just under 1600 miles but ran out of wood the last hundred miles.

We were able to drive the 700 miles home in 15 hours, this includes fuel stops and eating stops and also some bad weather.

The picture below is Sean French and Don Mannes warming from the flame. Also Doug Drost, Henry Austin and his friend Jay (I think, Sorry I am bad about remembering names)

Hello all,

Hello all,

Sorry I haven’t post much but Sean and I have been busy.

Ron,
Thanks for the wood and it was great getting to see you and Ronda again. I was just a little short on wood getting back home and had to run the tuck a few miles on gasoline but I don’t think it hurt it. I used much more wood at the event than I had prepared for. All day Wednesday and part of the day Thursday I was showing the truck flare , idling or taking people for rides. I might not move the truck for a while but if I flare it every hour or so it still uses fuel.

Don, Doug, Henry, Jay. It was a pleasure to get to spend the day with ya.
Doug thanks for leaving your hat in the truck. It will be worn on the Florida east coast. I am still practicing how to pronounce your name. I just say the word frost a few times before I try.

The little truck ran great coming home cruising in the 60-70 mph range and did well going up all the hills. Running at those speeds we were able to break the 100 mile per hopper load when using good wood. I think we could have held higher cruising speeds of 5 -10 mph and fairly sure of it if not pulling a trailer. About 1/4 to 3/8 throttle was all I was asking of the truck while cruising.

Along about Nashville Sean thought I was losing my mind when I poured in a gallon of water in the gasifier just before I reloaded it.???? ( we will get into that later as folks are driving their gasifiers further ,because I think it might confuse them now . I touched on it at Covert with Doug, Henry and gang but I was so tired I think my brain was shot and my have been confusing)

The 700 miles home took us about 17 hours which includes eating stops and taking some pictures at one of Mike L favorite sites at the rocket display. (Picture below)

Sean loaded up his ford and headed for Florida a couple hours ago (pics below)

Also Sean made a short video clip of us playing with the V-10 this morning in rough terrain. Ten minutes earlier we were doing 80 on the big road. (Slight down grade)

Here is a few videos of Sean

Here are a few videos of Sean driving back to Florida from Wayne's. Keep an eye on the middle digital temp gauge that measures the grate temps. It is no where near overheating at that speed. The left gauge is the gas temp as it leaves the gasifier, and the right gauge is the hopper temp. He is loaded with about 500 lbs.wood and rolling along nicely for that full size truck with a small V6.

He called me at 9:30 last night as he passed by and was headed down to another farm show in Orlando.

Hey there Wayne, yeah I guess

Hey there Wayne, yeah I guess I did forget that hat in your truck. It’s a real breathable hat that my wife sewed in a string because I used to lose it in the river on canoe trips from a wind gust and then have to chase it for a while. I’ll get another one. But I want to see that hat at the next woodgas meet so that Sean will match me. And the Blublockers glasses of course. Doug Drost from the land of frost……

Hello to ALL,

Hello to ALL,
I am finally back home at my computer it was a great adventure!!! And very nice to be able to have the opportunity to meet all of you finally.
I left Alabama and headed to Orlando for another show(more on that later pics. coming soon =) I just can't get over how much fun driving on wood is.
On my way back from Orlando yesterday I snapped some pics. driving through Daytona Beach then Bunnell at the truss plant. Stopped by the auto dealer
where I bought the f-150 in 2004 I thought it would be interesting to see if anyone noticed if it was running on wood they didn't. A storm was rolling in I had seconds to refuel without getting soaked.

Thanks again to Wayne and his family for the invite and for the wonderful hospitality.

Doug your hat and glasses are still here with me I will ride over to the beach soon and get a pic. on the east coast.

Chris, great video of the stillshots. The last frame was plumes of smoke from the Dakota, was a fan running backward to cause that?

Hello Tim,

Hello Tim,

The smoke is from one of the blowers reversing the air flow. I was building a char bed before the first drive on the new gasifier. Also you will note the flare was poor gas.
